Finishing Right Elevator Stiffeners (1/1/10)

1.4 Hours -

Nothing special today…just an hour and a half on the Scotch-Brite wheel finishing the right elevator stiffeners.  On the rudder, I did all the finishing on the Scotch-Brite.  However, with the elevator stiffeners, I’ve been cleaning them up initially with my vixen file and then doing the final finish with the Scotch-Brite.  I guess I didn’t really know how to use the vixen file at first, but thanks to one of the EAA Homebuilders videos, it was all made clear.  The vixen file quickly evens out and smooths rough edges.  The Scotch-Brite wheel can then be used to round everything and produce and extra smooth finish.  Using the vixen file first will reduce wear on my expensive Scotch-Brite wheel!

A few before and after pictures follow.  Sorry, not the greatest photography.

The top stiffener is finished while the bottom one is only rough cut. Notice the nice aluminum color my hands have become after an hour of using the Scotch-Brite wheel.

Aft ends of stiffeners. Top stiffener is finished while the bottom is only rough cut.

Forward ends of stiffeners. The left end is finished while the one on the right is only rough cut.
