Right Elevator Stiffeners (1/3/10)

2.0 Hours -

Not a whole lot accomplished today.

First, I final drilled the stiffeners to the right elevator skin.  The skins are pre-punched and the stiffeners are also completely pre-punched except for the aft-most holes on three stiffeners.  Those three holes are match drilled using the skin as a guide.

The right elevator stiffeners are final drilled to the skin.

Next, I deburred and dimpled all of the stiffeners.  My Avery deburr tool and pneumatic squeezer made quick work of this task.

The skin also had to be deburred and dimpled.  I started by removing strips of vinyl corresponding to the stiffener attach holes.  As before, I used a soldering iron and straight edge.  However, I decided this takes too much time for something that really doesn’t matter, so I sat the straight edge aside and just used the soldering iron free hand.  I’m no artist…my lines are pretty ugly!

The stiffener attachment holes in the right elevator skin are deburred.

I deburred the stiffener attach holes in the right elevator skin and, not wanting to pull out the c-frame to dimple the skin, I called it a day.

Finally, I made a little trip to Lowe’s to get some wood and hinges to make a bending brake for the aft edges of the elevators.  I also bought a dowel and a couple of vise grips for bending the leading edges of the rudder and elevators.
