Left Elevator Skeleton Started (1/28/10)

0.8 Hours -

I decided to spend a little time in the garage tonight starting the left elevator skeleton.  As usual, I’m amazed how much faster things go the second time around.  As second plane will probably be a breeze if the first one ever gets finished.

Another page turned. On to the left elevator.

Construction of the left skeleton was almost identical to the right so far.  The spar was assembled with reinforcing plates and nutplates.  Then, after fluting and edge finishing the ribs, I clecoed the end rib/counterweight rib/counterweight assembly.  With this assembly together, I match-drilled the counterweight.  The weight was then removed and the rib assembly was attached to the spar.

Deja vu...the left elevator counterweight/rib assembly.

Finally, I attached and final drilled the root rib to the spar.  This is the first real difference between right and left.  The left root rib (E-705) is only about half the length of the right root rib (E-709).  The rib is shortened on the left to allow for the trim tab.

The inboard rib is shorter on the left elevator to compensate for the trim tab.
